The importance of checking children's eyesight during school time

Pediatric Eye Clinic

Vision care plays an essential role in academic achievement

With the return to the classrooms of the little ones, the precautionary measures that both schools and parents have adopted this year due to the current health crisis have been extreme. Masks are part of the children's uniform and health care has been placed as the top priority within the school environment. But once again, one of the great forgotten among parents is the eye health of their children. Many children do not have their eyes checked at the beginning of the course, despite the fact that experts affirm that vision care is essential to maximize school performance and avoid eye health problems that can last over time. Among the most common conditions in childhood are hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism.

Good eye health and good vision are essential at any stage of life, but for children in the classroom it is even more so. It is necessary for the student to see correctly to learn to read, to see the blackboard and the teacher well when he explains, to develop writing ... but, in addition, the sense of sight helps the development of fine motor skills and improves hand-eye coordination

On many occasions, parents are not aware of children's vision problems and they do not express it clearly or do not consider that they should say it. Therefore, regular visits to the ophthalmologist are the best way to detect visual problems in children. "It is common that students with vision problems that have not yet been diagnosed not only perform less in school, but also tend to have greater difficulty in, for example, developing a taste for reading," adds Dorronzoro.

There are certain behaviors that can serve as a warning to know that a child may be suffering from vision problems:

-The child squints or winks when he has to look up at the blackboard or listen to the teacher's explanations.

-She complains of headaches or blurred vision, especially at the end of the school day or when doing homework.

-He has too much sensitivity to light and it is difficult for him to adapt his vision in dark environments.

-He sits too close to the television.

-He blinks very often and his eyes water.

-He does not focus his eyes precisely towards what is pointed out to him.

Although being attentive to these symptoms is important to detect these problems, it is necessary to emphasize the importance of going to the specialist at the beginning of each school year and doing it periodically or in the event of any anomaly.
