Keratoconus, a pathology that deforms the cornea and affects 1 in 2,000 people.

Pediatric Eye Clinic

Keratoconus is the minority eye disease that represents the leading cause of corneal transplantation among young people.

In fact, it is the most attended rare eye disease in clinics. About 75 percent of patients with this disease are diagnosed before the age of 25 and, the earlier the age of onset of the disease, the higher the risk that it progresses and does so more aggressively.

Thus, these progressive and severe cases are the ones that may require transplant surgery, when the increase in the curvature of the cornea is such that it causes vision loss that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses.

However, many of the corneal transplant cases could be avoided with an early diagnosis of the disease, which is key to applying less invasive treatments such as 'crosslinking', which effectively stops keratoconus before it reaches advanced stages.

Likewise, it is recommended to avoid rubbing the eyes, something that children and adolescents do with special virulence, and that constitutes an important risk factor for the pathology, together with the genetic one, since it is a disease that, in many cases, affects to several members of the same family.
