7 Habits harmful to sight

Pediatric Eye Clinic

The human being acts according to habits that he has perfectly integrated into his day to day almost without questioning them, but many of these routines are detrimental to visual health.

Habits are behaviors learned through repetition, which are performed regularly and automatically without questioning them, as well as being basic elements of human learning. Aristotle (Greek philosopher and scientist, 384-322 BC) already said: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit ”. And it is that, in terms of visual health, it is common to carry out daily practices that can compromise the good condition of the eyes, without being aware of it.

It is advisable to pay the necessary attention to identify those unhealthy habits, and thus be able to replace them with others that allow for correct visual health.

What routines are bad for the eyes?
Do not wear sunglasses throughout the year. UV rays in fall and winter can also damage your eyesight. The sun is lower and the sun's rays can strike more intensely.

Not taking care of our eating habits. Eating foods that increase our cholesterol or have a high sugar content can seriously compromise the state of our eye health.

Rubbing your eyes. By rubbing the eyes excessively, pressure is exerted on the cornea that allows it to become progressively deformed. In addition, this gesture can cause damage to the optic nerve and infections.

Exceeding the use of screens. The high number of hours in front of screens, in short distances and without the right conditions, can cause headaches, eyestrain and blurred vision.

Exceeding the hours of contact lens wear. This can lead to eye infections or injury.
Smoke. The harmful effect of tobacco smoke on the eyes is greater than it may seem. Tobacco smoke contains harmful particles that dry out and irritate the eyes.

Not checking eyesight frequently. It is advisable to carry out a complete ophthalmological examination once a year. This will help detect and correct any visual disturbances that may occur as soon as possible. It is not advisable, in terms of prevention, to wait until you feel that something is not going well, the ideal is to act in time on something as delicate and important as sight.
