Orthokeratology: a Simple Solution to a Complex Problem

Orthokeratology Doctor in Houston

Wearing lenses or glasses can be sometimes irritating. The ease and sense of relaxation in not wearing glasses are missed by all those people who regularly wear glasses. We all want to get rid of our glasses and perfect our eyesight. Now science has the solution called orthokeratology.

What is Orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology is the use of specially designed gas permeable contact lenses which flattens the cornea, removing the curvature which causes the defect in vision. The cornea is the front transparent part of the eye. These lenses help in correcting the vision of those suffering from myopia or shortsightedness.

These lenses are to be worn overnight while you sleep and have to be removed in the morning. The remolding of the cornea takes place while one wears the lenses. After removing the lenses, an individual has a clear vision and his eye-sight is considerably improved. This effect is pronounced throughout the day and one doesn’t need glasses or lens to see anymore. The effect might last for two days as well if using it under proper care.

A very important thing to keep in mind is that Orthokeratology is a temporary treatment. The effect does not last for long and one has to wear the lenses on a regular basis to ensure a clear and healthy vision.

Why Orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology has a lot of advantages over other conventional treatments.

  • It’s a temporary and reversible treatment which means the chances of complications are less.
  • It’s a non-surgical procedure so those who have a fear of surgeries can opt for this procedure.
  • It does not cause any discomfort in the eye.
  • Lenses are to be worn in the night during your sleep rather than in the day.
  • This ensures that one can engage in any activity throughout the day without using these lenses.
  • One of the most important advantages is that it is economical in nature and an average person can easily afford it.
  • Young children can use these lenses without the chances of complications whereas LASIK is not advisable for children under the age of 18. These lenses will be helpful in controlling the progress of child myopia through the young years.

Orthokeratology is approved by FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and being non-surgical in nature, makes it a favorite amongst the common people these days. It has a lot of advantages over other conventional treatment methods.

When Do I Expect to See the Change?

In most cases, change can be seen after a few days of wearing lenses. In some cases, depending on the eye conditions and problems, the improvement in vision might take some time. Optimum vision can be achieved only in 4-6 months with proper treatment. However, this treatment might not work for all and a small percentage of people might not show significant signs of improvement during the course of treatment. But, this differs on a person to person basis!

Orthokeratology for Myopic Children

Some recent studies show that orthokeratology might slow down or control the progress of myopia in children, though there are still no solid scientific studies to back this claim.
