Ortho-K is effective in slowing the progression of nearsightedness
Increasing nearsightedness (myopia) is more than just a condition that causes the need for higher prescriptions and thicker glasses. We are starting to identify myopia as a disease that comes with increased risk of conditions such a retinal detachment, macular degeneration and glaucoma.
The earlier age in which a child becomes nearsighted, the faster it will progress. A child who shows signs of nearsightedness at age 7 will become significantly more nearsighted than at child who develops it at age 12. This means higher prescriptions and vision changing more often.
The good news is that we can use orthokeratology to slow and prevent the progression of myopia. So, not only does ortho-k eliminated the need for daytime glasses and contact lenses, but also is reduces the risk of other potentially blinding conditions.
Ortho-K gives patients and parents optimism in knowing something can be done for their nearsightedness.
