Things You Need to Know About Orthokeratology

Ortho-K Specialized in Houston

Refractive errors occur when irregularities in the structure of your eyes interfere with the light-bending process in your eyes. Myopia (nearsightedness), for example, results from having an elongated eye shape or an overly curved cornea. Dr. Pedro Gomez, offers OrthoK therapy as an effective and innovative solution to myopia and other refractive errors.

What Is Orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology is a non-surgical method of correcting refractive errors. The revolutionary technology behind it helps correct the underlying structural infirmities in your eyes that are responsible for your refractive error.

How Does It Work?

Orthokeratology contact molds look similar to regular contacts. The main difference is that OrthoK molds are only worn at night, while you sleep. As you sleep, the molds gently reshape your cornea. When you wake up, simply remove the molds and enjoy clear vision throughout the day. You’ll need to continue wearing the molds every night to enjoy improved visual acuity during the daytime.

How Is It Different Than Corneal Reshaping Therapy or Vision Shaping Treatment?

They are the same. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has currently approved two OrthoK brands. In April 2002, Paragon Vision Sciences was the first company to be allowed to manufacture Corneal Refractive Therapy, also known as Paragon Z CRT®. Bausch and Lomb followed suit in December 2004, releasing Vision Shaping Treatment OrthoK molds.

What Vision Problems Can Ortho K Manage?

Your orthokeratology specialist explains that OrthoK was initially recommended for managing myopia. Several studies have since shown that this treatment option is also effective at correcting astigmatism and hyperopia (farsightedness), and can help with presbyopia too.

Why Should I Try OrthoK?

OrthoK delivers quick results. After wearing the molds for just one night, you can immediately enjoy sharper and clearer eyesight the next morning without any additional prescriptive eyewear.
