When Contacts Make Sense for Children?
Wave Contact Lenses in Houston
The question of whether or not to wear contact lenses is less a matter of chronological age than one of maturity. Pediatric contact lens wearers must understand the importance of good contact lens hygiene, from changing disposable lenses on schedule and wearing contacts according to their intended use to cleaning permanent contacts thoroughly. It's certainly possible to prescribe contacts to kids as young as 8 to 11 years of age. Contact lenses offer certain significant benefits for some younger patients with refractive errors such as nearsightedness, astigmatism, and farsightedness. These include:
- Myopia control - Studies have shown that regular contact lens wear can reduce the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) during childhood, the period most vulnerable to myopia development. This is especially true for orthokeratology or "ortho-k" lenses, which are only worn at night for corrected vision during the daytime.
- Sports safety - Unlike glasses, which can easily be damaged in high-impact activities, contact lenses remain safely in the eye while child engages in organized sports or after-school fun. They're also much easier to keep up with than a separate pair of sports goggles.
- Personal preference - Some kids love eyeglasses, while others feel ashamed or awkward wearing them -- which may lead those kids to "forget" to wear their glasses. Contacts not only provide invisible vision correction, removing self-consciousness, but they also boost the odds that your child will wear them as required.
