Ortho-K Benefits for Kids

Pedro Gomez OD

Ortho-K, a non-surgical alternative to LASIK, is a new way to correct vision problems in children without having them wear glasses or contacts during the day. Ortho-K is short for orthokeratology, which uses corneal molds to reshape the eye.

  • Corrects nearsightedness
  • Corrects vision while children sleep
  • Helps correct astigmatism
  • No glasses or contacts during the day
  • Has been shown to slow the progression of nearsightedness
  • Ortho-K from our Optometrist Corrects Vision in Children as Young as Seven

Children as young as seven can wear Ortho-K retainers, providing they follow good hygiene. Our Optometrist will examine your child’s eyes and create a prescription for Ortho-K corneal retainers The retainers are inserted at night. While your child sleeps, the shape of their eye is gently corrected. When the retainers are taken out in the morning, the eye retains the shape. When the retainers are worn nightly, corneal retainers are not needed during the day.

Ortho-K Helps Kids See the Board and Play Sports without Glasses

Ortho-K is great for kids that play sports. While the retainers are being worn, the special design of the retainer helps reshape the eye to corrected nearsightedness. This means that your child does not need corrective lenses or glasses during the day to see the board, read textbooks, participate in class or play sports.

Correct Nearsightedness Early with Ortho-K from our Eye Doctor

Ortho-K from our eye doctor has shown remarkable results in correcting nearsightedness in children. The retainers help prevent continued growth of the elongation of the eye, which determines the extent of your child’s nearsightedness. In effect, this means that Ortho-K can prevent your child’s nearsightedness from getting worse.

Tissue Stays Healthy

Ortho-K is not surgical or permanent. It does not harm the tissue of your child’s eye. When the retainers are removed, the eye slowly reverts back to its original shape within 24 to 48 hours.

Are you ready to help your child see better with Ortho-K?
