Understanding Keratoconus

Keratoconus Specialized in Houston

To understand keratoconus, it's important to grasp the cornea's role in normal eyesight. This semi-spherical transparent tissue is shaped so the light will pass through it uniformly for clear retinal images. Many people are born with tiny imperfections on the corneal curvature, a condition known as astigmatism. But the corneal tissue of some individuals is abnormally thin or weak, and this can allow the cornea to bulge outward into a cone-like form. As you can imagine, these changes interfere with vision, producing issues such as:

  • Moderate to severe astigmatism or myopia (nearsightedness)
  • A corrective lens prescription that seems to be changing constantly
  • Light and glare sensitivity
  • Eye irritation

Keratoconus may start in the 20's and develop throughout young adulthood before finally settling down to a final state of distortion. Every once in a while, an advanced case of keratoconus will cause fissures or swelling to develop in the cornea. This may produce a sudden worsening of vision until the injuries heal -- and the scar tissue left behind can cause additional vision problems.
