Amblyopia or "lazy eye", what do the causes include?

Pediatric Eye Clinic

Amblyopia or "lazy eye" is one of the most common vision problems in children. This happens because one of the eyes does not communicate well with the brain. The eye may appear normal but the brain "prefers" the other eye. In some cases, both eyes may be affected.

The causes include:

Squint or squint eye: A condition in which the eyes do not look in the same direction
Refractive errors in one eye: When one of the eyes cannot focus as well as the other because of a shape problem. This includes nearsightedness, farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.
Cataract: Dull or clouding of the eye lens
The treatment for amblyopia is to force the lazy eye to use. There are two ways to do this. One is for the child to wear the "good" eye patch for several hours every day for a few weeks or months. The other is with drops that temporarily blur vision. In this case, a drop of a medicine called atropine is put into the child's "good" eye. Sometimes it is also necessary to treat the underlying cause. This may include glasses or surgery.
