All Children Should be Screened Before they are School Age
How Is Amblyopia Diagnosed?
All children should be screened before they are school-age. Your child's doctor or the vision program at school will check three aspects of your child's eye health:
- Your child's eyes let light all the way through.
- Both eyes see equally well.
- The eyes move normally.
The Main Eye Diseases
There are many treatable or preventable eye diseases:
- Cataract is a condition that is important to detect and treat early in childhood when it occurs. It is unusual in childhood but can be treated successfully with surgery by a paediatric ophthalmologist as the surgery is more complex than for adult cataract.
Are Extremely Important
According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), infants should have their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age. Children then should receive additional eye exams at 3 years of age, and just before they enter kindergarten or the first grade at about age 5 or 6.
