Vitamin A: Good for your retina, helps reduce age related macular degeneration and cataracts. Find it in eggs, milk and most yellow and green veggies like carrots. Mom was right again!
Vitamin C: Some research says it will help to reduce the risk of cataracts. Find it in citrus fruits and berries.
Vitamin E: Slows age related eye diseases. Find this in nuts and leafy green veggies. Pop a few almonds as a snack and have spinach at dinner.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids: They provide anti-inflammatory products to help prevent eye diseases. Salmon and walnuts are the best bets here.
Secret #2 – Sunglasses, Sunglasses, Sunglasses
Wear them all your round to protect your eyes from UV rays and glare. Exposure to ultraviolet rays in both the short term and long term can damage your eyes and lead to cataracts and age related macular degeneration.
It is helpful to wear wrap around shades to block side exposure and don’t forget the children. They need protection as much as adults.
Secret #3 – Proper Lighting
Back to mom again. Our parents used to tell us to turn on the light when we were reading in the dark. Today we know that for strong healthy eyes we need to have the proper amount of light and we should reduce the amount of glare.
When working on a computer your screen should be similar to the light in the room. If it is a lot darker or lighter, then your eyes may become fatigued and uncomfortable leading to headaches and eye strain.
Never position your laptop screen directly in front of a window or have a window directly behind you as you work. If possible switch it so the window is at your side. If you can see your reflection in the screen, there is too much glare. Another secret is to simply adjust the contrast on your monitor until it is comfortable for your eyes.
Digital eye strain is becoming more widespread as everyone, including children and teens, spend so much time with hand held devices, laptops and computers.
Secret #4 – Moderate Exercise
If it seems to you that exercise is a cure for everything, you may be right. Moderate amounts of exercise are good for your overall health and therefore your eye health. Exercise helps keep your blood pressure down, and combined with a healthy diet can help reduce your weight and prevent diabetes. Diabetes causes a number of serious eye diseases including diabetic retinopathy, a serious complication of diabetes which leads to vision loss.
Secret #5 – See your Eye Care Specialist Regularly
Maybe this is not really a big secret, but routine comprehensive eye exams are a way to keep your eyes healthy and prevent the onset and progression of serious eye conditions.
