Keratoconus Diagnosis & Treatment
Keratoconus Specialized in Houston
Keratoconus is an eye disease of which the cornea thins and bulges into a cone shape. This irregular shape deflects light as it enters the eye and causes blurred or distorted vision. The eye disease typically starts during a person’s teen years and can appear in one or both eyes.
What are the Symptoms of Keratoconus?
There are a handful of symptoms linked to keratoconus. Symptoms can first appear as early as puberty or in late teen years.
Contact us if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms:
- Double vision
- Kayser-Fleischer ring, or ringed discoloration around the iris
- Sensitivity to light
Can Keratoconus be Treated or Cured?
Keratoconus cannot be completely cured, but there are several options to help with seeing clearly:
- Soft contact lenses (with hydrogel: gel-like plastic & water)
- Artificial tears
- Scleral contact lenses
- Corneal transplant
In keratoconus’ mild form, glasses or contact lenses might be all you need. If it progresses, you may require more complex care.
