How Would I Know If My Child Has a Vision Problem?
Pediatric Optometrist in Houston
There’s a big dilemma when it comes to children and vision issues: they often don’t tell anyone that they are having a problem.
This silence isn’t the result of embarrassment or fear; children often don’t know they have a problem because they think the way they see is the same way everyone else sees.
So, if your child isn’t speaking up about not seeing clearly, how do you know there’s a problem? Though often overlooked, there are some common warning signs a child is having an eye health issue, and these include:
- Difficulty remembering things read
- Losing place when reading
- Frequent eye rubbing
- Frequent blinking
- Head tilting
- Covering one eye while reading
- Seeing double
- Short attention span
- Avoiding activities that require reading
- Holding reading materials close to the face
Children who complain of headaches, or who have eyes that appear different from one another (turned in or out), are also suspect for kids’ eye health issues.
Not surprisingly, clues that a child’s vision is suffering can be very difficult to spot. Even something as simple as your child not reaching his or her potential in school could warrant an eye exam.
