Orthokeratology: An Excellent Option for Children
Ortho-K Specialized in Houston
Orthokeratology is a method of reshaping a person's cornea using gas permeable contact lenses. These contacts provide a temporary change in cornea shape that can improve vision without the need to wear glasses.
How Orthokeratology Works?
When undergoing orthokeratology, patients are asked to wear gas permeable contact lenses at night while sleeping. These contacts are hard to help reshape the cornea overnight, yet they are designed to allow the eyes to breathe and receive oxygen. After six to eight hours, the shape of the cornea is revised, allowing a patient to see clearly without glasses or contacts.
It's as simple as that.
General Candidates for Orthokeratology
Orthokeratology is an excellent option for people who experience certain levels of nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. Patients should want to improve their vision without having to wear contacts or glasses throughout their day.
A Non-Surgical Alternative to Refractive Procedures
One of the most attractive aspects of ortho-k treatment is that there is no surgery required to achieve great results. It can be an alternative to LASIK and other refractive procedures. Patients don't have to face any risks from ortho-k treatment unlike laser eye surgery.
Orthokeratology for Nearsightedness and Astigmatism
People who suffer from up to -6.00 diopters of nearsightedness and up to -1.75 diopters of astigmatism are often eligible to undergo orthokeratology. Other conditions regarding the health of their eyes will be taken into account, of course.
Orthokeratology for Farsightedness and Presbyopia
Some new lenses have been developed to help address farsightedness as well as presbyopia (a type of age-related farsightedness). Orthokeratology is a potential option for people with up to +5.00 diopters of farsightedness.
An Excellent Option for Children
Many children have been able to undergo ortho-k treatment with excellent results. It's a great option for kids and teenagers who will be able to tolerate wearing contact lenses during bedtime.
